The Shires Summer Fete – a day to remember

The Shires Summer Fete – a day to remember

On 5th September the weather held, the crowds came and our first Summer Fete was a great success. It wasn’t exactly a heat wave, but then it didn’t rain even if for some of the afternoon the warmest place to be was next to the barbecue, skilfully manned by friend of The Shires, our builder Steve. The variety of things to see, to do, to eat, to drink and to just spend money on was first class.

As well as just a good English summer day out, The Shires organised the fete to help raise funds for the next work in progress, which is the building of a new Sensory Garden and adventure playground. In all, The Shires Summer Fete raised just over £1000 for the project.

Some of those enjoying the day included...

Kim & Jodie - The Magic Girls

Kim & Jodie - The Magic Girls

The ‘Magic Girls’, Kim and Jodi whose stall displaying magic tricks was very alluring, selling most of the stock to Barry Walker, PR consultant to The Shires, who admitted to being just a big kid.

Michelle, Hair Braiding

Michelle, Hair Braiding

Michelle was doing a brisk trade in hair braiding, a skill she taught herself in Portugal where, unable to speak the language, she hit upon this idea as a cash generator. Well, she certainly generated some cash for the adventure playground…

Kirsty and Linda on the Cake Stall

Kirsty and Linda on the Cake Stall

Kirsty and Linda were doing a roaring trade on the cake stall, selling out by the end of the day. A big Shires thank you to all those kind bakers and cake makers who donated their wonderful cakes, scones, fruit cakes, sponges, and all manner of wonderful fare.

Steve on the BBQ

Steve on the BBQ

Steve the Builder did an extraordinary job on the barbecue, keeping the visitors supplied with burgers and hot dogs, all with his special seasoning sprinkled on.

Team Leader Charles

Team Leader Charles

Team Leader Charles was in charge of the Gifts & Donations stall, which was brimming over with generous items that were donated to be either raffled or auctioned.

So, What Was The Teddy's Name?

So, What Was The Teddy's Name?

Every one loves a cuddly toy, and this one was no exception. HR Co-ordinator Alison was trying to get people to guess the name of the teddy - for a suitable donation, of course. After raising nearly £50 we now know the teddy is called Ella.

Slightly Reformed

Slightly Reformed

Josh Wells and James Steckelmacher took time out from playing in the band Slightly Reformed for a well earned burger.

A Big Thank You

A Big Thank You

A big thank you to all who came, all who helped, all who bought our wonderful products, all who made cakes, all who donated gifts to sell and everyone else involved with the day.

Look out later in the year for our next event – The Shires Christmas Bazaar. That’s one for the diary.

Kindest regards

Julie Wells and all the team at The Shires
